I’m Moira, a photographer, teacher and blogger.

At the moment, I’m happily living in the picturesque village of Sedgefield, Western Cape, South Africa and using my camera to reveal the beautiful essence of an animal’s spirit is my absolute joy.

I’ve been enamoured with animals ever since I was able to reach out with chubby baby hands, grasp two handfuls of canine fur and plant a drooling kiss on a patient head.

David Young once said

“It is the photographing of ordinary things, in extraordinary light, which results in extraordinary photographs”

Extraordinary photographs are what I aspire to.

Why pet photography?

The image you see below, is the only photograph I have of myself and my beloved childhood pet, Patches: a black and white mongrel of questionable lineage.  Patches and I were joined at the hip, he was my best friend, confidante, comforter and soul-mate, separated by a cruel twist of fate when he was only two and it makes me sad to think that this is the only tangible memory I have of him – one small photograph that doesn’t reflect his spirit or show his bouncy personality, adorable face and comical expressions.  Animals are with us for such a short time, yet leave an indelible mark on our hearts, what better way to honour their memory than to have a beautiful photographic piece of art to treasure for ever.  That is why…

… my goal, each time I lift the camera to my face and look through its lens, is to find the light within my subject, to reveal their beautiful spirit through my images and create an emotive and compelling piece of personalised art.  Art that has soul.

  1. I think pet photography is great. Our cats are part of the family. One of our cats will try to follow me all around town since I try to walk everywhere. He really likes to go to the books store because the ladies love it when he comes in. He is a cranky old man and I take pictures of him all the time.

  2. your pics have always been great Moi…and it was great meeting you in Mauritius… I love seeing your pics when you post them Keep that lens capturing the moments. xx Thurle

  3. I disagree with you on one point… his personality does shine through some. Even if you don’t think it shows all but here he looks as if he’s enjoying a secret joke :) (well at least to me) Sorry you don’t have more shots of him.

    • Thanks C, actually this was the ONLY image ever taken of him and it was for a local newspaper article because the two dogs and the rabbit got on so well with each other, some journalist thought it newsworthy at the time, I am so grateful to have this one at least :)

      • Wow :) Well, you should probably look him up and thank the guy :) I can imagine how relieved and sad you must feel at the same time. I had some pics of when I was little but they got destroyed. Can’t go back in time to take them over… know what you mean tho. Do you have any pets now?

Go on, leave a comment. Make my day.
