A selkie is a shy, shape-shifting faerie creature that lives as a seal in the sea but sheds its magical seal pelt to take human form and walk on land. The female selkies are notoriously beautiful and bewitching and if the seal skin becomes lost or stolen, the selkie is forced to remain in human form until she can find her pelt and return once more to the ocean. It is rumoured that male selkies overturn boats and cause storms at sea to avenge the ruthless slaughter of seals.
Early one morning we discovered some selkie children coming in from the sea to play on the shore, we guessed that they must have come from Seal Island near Mossel Bay. They stayed a while, playing and frolicking on the beach and left almost as quickly as they arrived.

Once a Selkie finds its skin again, neither chains of steel nor chains of love can keep her from the sea. From that day on, it was forbidden to harm a seal on the island.
