PEACH BLOSSOMS+NAARTJIES = SPRING

“Is the spring coming?” he said. “What is it like?”…

“It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine…”

Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

Even though we only celebrate Spring day on the 1st of September in South Africa,  the peach blossoms are blooming, daffodils are popping up in all the local gardens and the fruit & veg section of the supermarket is loaded with naartjies.   As far as I’m concerned, it’s Spring!

A naartjie is a South African word for a small citrus fruit much like a tangerine or a mandarin, easy to peel and oh so juicy and tangy.  Can you feel the promise of summer in the orange and brown tones of this image?

When we moved into Custard Cottage eighteen months ago, this little peach tree looked dead and we almost pulled it out, with a bit of pruning and TLC it managed to sprout some leaves last year but there were no blossoms. What a wonderful surprise to wake up one morning a few days ago and see our tree, albeit tentatively at first, sprouting these beautiful soft pink blossoms.

I absolutely love this orange glass and metal bowl bought on sale at “Poetry”, one of my favourite shops,  I have a real soft spot for coloured glass, must be my Irish Catholic upbringing, all those church stained glass windows…

Ruby is smiling from ear to ear because Spring means warmer weather and walks on the beach!
