Once upon a time …
there was a cat called Lexie, a hand-me-down cat from a previous human family who were moving house and didn’t want her any longer.
Lexie lived in a small house with her new human and two other cats called Chiquita and Pepito. She wasn’t a snob or stuck up like some cats are and she loved human beings, in fact she was so convinced she’d been human in one of her 9 lives, she often tried to communicate with people by purring, peering intently into their faces and meowing meaningfully.
Lexie was indeed a most beautiful, fluffy, friendly and affectionate cat.
Chiquita and Pepito, on the other hand, were Siamese cats with short smooth fur and mesmerising jewel-like blue eyes; even though they were not very sociable or welcoming, all the visitors to the house would remark on their beautiful eyes but never say a word about poor Lexie.
This made Lexie sad and she longed to have blue eyes so people would think she was beautiful too.
One evening, Lexie was sitting on the steps outside the back door staring at the full moon and wishing with all her heart that her eyes would turn blue. When suddenly out of nowhere, a lithe and beautiful faerie appeared wearing a long silver gossamer gown, inlaid with tiny dewdrops that sparkled in the moonlight.
“Who are you?” hissed Lexie pulling her ears back and puffing her tail up to twice it’s size.
“My name is Aine” said the faerie, “the moon told me of your heart’s desire. Why is it that you yearn so desperately for blue eyes Lexie?” A little self-consciously, Lexie explained how she didn’t feel as attractive as Chiquita and Pepito because no one commented on her eyes or said she was exquisite.
“Oh Lexie!” laughed Aine, taking her over to the birdbath to see her reflection in the pool, “Don’t you know how gorgeous you are, within and without?
Look at how fabulous your natural eye liner enhances your lovely green eyes, not to mention how grand your magnificent fluffy tail is but most importantly Lexie, is that you have a good and beautiful, loving heart.
Lexie’s heart beat a steady rhythm as she tentatively gazed into the pool, recognising for the first time how lovely her fine features, alluring eye make up and handsome tail were.
The moral of the story?
“Beauty shouldn’t be about changing yourself to achieve an ideal or be more socially acceptable. Real beauty, the interesting, truly pleasing kind, is about honoring the beauty within you and without you. It’s about knowing that someone else’s definition of pretty has no hold over you.”

Oh my gosh, so she does! I didn’t even know such a cat existed. I shall tell Lexie next time I see her, she is a special cat from the forest, no wonder the faeries come and talk to her.
