“You’re living your days at the moment how a sheep grazes, meandering, not engaged with anything much.” ― Nikki Gemmell, The Bride Stripped Bare
My dearest Peeps
here’s a quick question for you – have you found your word for 2016 yet?
Don’t have a clue what I’m talking about? I didn’t either until a short while ago but never fear my dears, here’s the skinny on finding your word; there’s a new practice taking the place of the age old tradition of New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions, let’s face it, that turn out to be promises we rarely manage to keep because they sound too much like rules cloaked in hard work, a punishment almost : I’ll stop eating chocolate, drinking wine/beer/whiskey, lose 10 kgs, go to the gym 5 times a week, walk my dog every day, be nicer to my family/mother-in-law/boss and so on. Ugh, you get the picture yes?
Finding a word that will inspire you for the year to come is a much softer, more encouraging way of doing things and more likely to actually bear fruit because it’s focuses on setting an intention or a tone for what we want the year ahead to look and feel like, instead of a list of promises like pie-crusts – just waiting to be broken.
I thought finding a word that would inspire and encourage me all year long was a superb idea and of course in my inimitable fashion I dived straight in, head first.
After much hemming and hawing, feverish scribbling, circling and colouring-in, I finally reached my word.
ACCEPTANCE, PEACE and DIRECTION were the semi-finalists but in the end, DIRECTION won first place.
“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.” ― Rumi
THIS IS WHAT DIRECTION MEANS TO ME:
- A course, track or path along which someone moves in order to reach a destination.
- General aim or purpose
- Way in which someone or something is developing; trend or tendency
- The guidance, supervision and instruction of someone on how to do something.
I must remember that my word is not carved in stone and I can always choose a different word if DIRECTION is not working for me but at least I have a place to start, some direction (excuse the pun) if you will.
A short aside on my lovely watercolour pencils; this is the first time I’ve used them and I was simply thrilled and delighted. First I used the pencils for colouring-in the mandala and then I dipped the paintbrush in water and brushed it over the completed mandala. Voilà! The result was a jewel-like watercolour painting, well sort of but it’s bright and pretty and I like it.

“I choose to focus my energy on what I believe deserves my time. Life passes us by so quickly and before we know it, we’re looking back at our story; make sure the choices you decide on will give you a movie worth watching.” ― Nikki Rowe
