THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE | Poetry – A Soft Place to Fall

The images featured in this post are of Mr T’s (semi-tame) Shrike, they were taken yesterday during sunset at Custard Cottage.

This beautiful winged one appears to be a loner with no mate in sight, she’s been hanging around Custard Cottage for some time now and gives the naughty Drongos a real run for their money, this brave girl (I like to think she’s a girl) doesn’t back down for any of them.

THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight’s all a-glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet’s wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

– William Butler Yeats – born in Dublin 1865

For the peeps who would like to enjoy an audio version of this poem, here’s a soundcloud recording of The Lake Isle Of Innisfree, performed by singer/harpist, Claire Roche – can’t get more Irish than that methinks. Enjoy.
