“Any real, beautiful thing in this world shouldn’t be tamed or claimed or broken. It should be allowed to be, worked with, not against, appreciated.”
― Carly Kade, In The Reins
I recently visited a farm in order to plan a future photoshoot with 6 very special horses, I needed to take a couple of test shots and took the opportunity to try out my new Canon EOS 80D DSLR. I’m delighted to report that it didn’t disappoint, I have a good feeling I’m going to love using my new camera!
During this fortuitous visit I witnessed and photographed one of the most beautiful scenarios of my life; that of a patient and gentle man earning the trust of a highly sensitive 2 month old colt.
The whole experience took almost 3 hours, I was so transfixed with the beauty and reverence of it all, it felt as though a mere 30 minutes had passed.
There were no harsh words or cruel gestures, no violent touching or grabbing – just gentle coaxing.
“To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.”
― George MacDonald
For secrets uttered softly into pricked and troubled ears, these men were known as Whisperers.”
― Nicholas Evans, The Horse Whisperer
The other 4 leggeds watched the proceedings with interest…
The fat Welsh pony and her foal paid no mind at all and partook instead in a satisfying mutual grooming session.
“One of the strongest loves I’ve ever witnessed is the love a mother has for her child.”
― Richelle E. Goodrich, Eena, The Return of a Queen
“Horses make a landscape look beautiful.”
― Alice Walker
“Horses were never wrong. They always did what they did for a reason, and it was up to you to figure it out.”
― Jeannette Walls, Half Broke Horses
Things are getting interesting…
Indeed they are…
“He’s of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger…. he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts.”
― William Shakespeare, Henry V
“I understood then, with absolute certainty, that the
ability of the horse to sense emotion, energy and spirit is
beyond what most of the human world realises. This is why
their impact on us can be so instant, so consistently
positive, so transformational.”
― Pam Billinge, The Spell of the Horse
“If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that horses do listen to you. They may not have a clue what you’re saying, but they know the tone in which you say it. I’ll sing to horses so hooked on their own nerves they’re ready to climb into the sky, and sometimes it’s one of the only things that keep them on the ground.”
― Mara Dabrishus, Stay the Distance
“Sometimes it’s not the strength but gentleness that cracks the hardest shells.”
― Richard Paul Evans, Lost December
