Mom and I had planned the shoot for weeks, there was a bit of a scare when Miss B broke out in a weird looking rash just before the session, luckily for us, it cleared up. We were hoping for a glorious sunset all orange and pink for the perfect backdrop to this sweet family’s photo session on the beach near Sedgefield but……

by the time we arrived at the beach, the sky was one big blanket of overcast clouds and there was a firm breeze blowing. As much as I love the golden light of a perfect sunset, an overcast day has a mood and beauty all of it’s own too.
Photography tip: On an overcast day I need to change the way I photograph as well, the light is just EVERYWHERE so it can be a little tricky as there is very little contrast and hardly any directional light at all. It helps to fully front light everybody wherever possible.

Little Miss B, shy at first, soon showed her outgoing fun loving, slightly mischievous side. As soon as Daddy began to sing the Baby Shark song she went into full on dance mode.

I have NO idea why kids love that song so much but it has an undeniable catchy beat and tune. If you’ve never heard it before, try doing a You Tube search for Baby Shark Dance and soon you too could be singing, “Baby Shark, do do do do do do do, Baby Shark, do do do do do do do, Baby Shark, do do do do do do do, Baby Shark!”

“And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon.”
― Edward Lear, The Owl and the Pussycat

“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”
― Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

“My mom smiled at me. Her smile kind of hugged me.”
― R.J. Palacio, Wonder

“I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.”
― Anais Nin

“It’s the sound of the sea that makes you believe in mermaids.”
― Anthony T.Hincks

I must go down to the sea again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.― John Masefield, Sea Fever: Selected Poems

“A father’s tears and fears are unseen but his care and protection remains as a pillar of strength throughout our lives.”
― Ama H.Vanniarachchy

“Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.”
― Barbara Kingsolver, Homeland and Other Stories

“She had never loved him so much as she did in that instant.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
