โHorses make a landscape look beautiful.โ
โ Alice Walker
It’s no secret I have a HUGE soft spot for animals but dogs, cats and horses are at the top of that list. I absolutely LOVED photographing this equine session, the light was perfect and the subjects were gorgeous; 4 horses, 4 youngsters, 1 sunset and plenty of love to go around.
It makes soul drool when I get to photograph the beautiful connection between a human and an animal and double kudos to the parents who bring their children up with a love and respect for all animals, four legged, winged ones and crawling ones.
Enough of my waxing lyrical! Instead, here are some beautiful quotes to go along with my favourite images from the session.

โIf I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that horses do listen to you. They may not have a clue what you’re saying, but they know the tone in which you say it. I’ll sing to horses so hooked on their own nerves they’re ready to climb into the sky, and sometimes it’s one of the only things that keep them on the ground.โ

โHe’s of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger…. he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts.โ
โ William Shakespeare, Henry V

This next image is a funny one, when I want the horses ears to come forward I have Mr T play a horse whinny sound effect, sometimes the horses whinny back.

โHe moved like a dancer, which is not surprising; a horse is a beautiful animal, but it is perhaps most remarkable because it moves as if it always hears music.โ
โ Mark Helprin, Winter’s Tale

โSadie had been taking lessons for over a year, and she still learned something each and every time she rode.โ
โ Valerie Ormond, Believing in Horses, Too

โHe left his hoofprints burnt into my heartโ
โ Berneen Vidra

โThere is much we can learn from a friend who happens to be a horse.โ
โ Aleksandra Layland, Bind Not the Heart: A Windflower Saga Novella

โFirst, no other animals have the same mirroring effect as horses, meaning they will mirror humans’ emotions. Second, they are not judgmental or biased. And third, they live within a social structure, their herds, much the same as we do.โ
โ Valerie Ormond, Believing in Horses, Too

โHeaven is high and earth wide.If you ride three feet above ground than other men, you will know what that means.โ

โThere is no better place to heal a broken heart than on the back of a horse.โ
โ Missy Lyons, Cowboys Don’t Sing

I LOVE the old palamino in the last few photos. As a teenager, I had a pony who got too old to ride competitively, so I gave him away to a young girl who wanted to learn how to ride. He lived in the lap of luxury as the only pony on the property and totally ruled the roost.
He (finally) left for the great pasture in the sky nearly 12 years later (and probably over 30 years of age) and the girl now an adult and living in the UK cried for a week! He forged strong bonds with the kids he carried.
I wonder how many children he taught to ride in his loooong and illustrious career?

Thanks Mandy it’s one of my very favourite ones too. Just love the pink rosebuds on the pony’s bridle and the dress was the little girl’s special party dress ๐
